The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, traveled to El Ejido, where he, along with Mayor Francisco Góngora, inspected an area affected by a storm. During the visit to Juan Berenguel's greenhouse, the minister highlighted the work of the Junta de Andalucía in coordination with local councils to assess the damage caused by the inclement weather.
In Almería and Málaga, damage was reported affecting both crops and rural roads. It was mentioned that the exact figure of the damage would not be known until the standing water is removed. Furthermore, the increase in the level of reservoirs was emphasized as a positive consequence of the rains.
The minister pointed out that around 400 hectares of crops suffered severe damage, with about 15-20 hectares of greenhouses completely collapsed. He assured the total commitment of the Andalusian Government in support of the affected sector and mentioned the importance of accurately quantifying the losses.
In El Ejido, it is estimated that about 4,264 hectares of greenhouses, mainly of cucumber and pepper, were affected. In the Guadalhorce region of Málaga, citrus crops were affected in municipalities such as Álora, Cártama, and Pizarra. The need to assess the losses before taking concrete measures was stressed.
In areas like Almanzora, river overflows were recorded that flooded areas in Almanzora, Cantoria, and Olula del Río. Local authorities will collaborate with regional agricultural offices to assist those affected with tax reductions or agricultural insurance. In the province of Málaga, reservoirs increased their capacity thanks to the rains.
The storm wreaked havoc on crops in the western Almeria, while the rains benefited autumn crops. The Junta de Andalucía has assessed over 4,200 hectares of damaged greenhouses in El Ejido. In summary, they will focus on evaluating the damage and providing support to the affected farmers.
